MAXPlanetary Cartridge Ratings

Static Load Ratings

The following torque measurements are for a static load condition. The torque values listed are for the output of the stage.

Cartridge
Torque

2:1 Cartridge

Fails at 185 Nâ‹…m

3:1 Cartridge

Tested to 290 Nâ‹…m (no failure)

4:1 Cartridge

Fails at 270 Nâ‹…m

5:1 Cartridge

Fails at 240 Nâ‹…m

9:1 Cartridge

Fails at 180 Nâ‹…m

1/2" Hex Socket Output

Fails at 250 Nâ‹…m

1:1 Brake Cartridge

Tested to 1,200 Nâ‹…m (no failure)

Shock loads can cause the gearbox to fail in situations where the steady-state torque is still within allowable limits.

Cantilevered load on the output shaft puts additional stress on the gearbox and will reduce the torque the gearbox can withstand.

2:1 Cartridge Specifics

The MAXPlanetary 2:1 Cartridge (REV-21-2140) is designed for lower torque applications. Due to its lower failure rating, it should generally be placed closest to the input or motor in a multi-stage MAXPlanetary stack. It is ideal for intakes and faster mechanisms that need a small or specific amount of reduction, while keeping the flexibility to quickly swap cartridges and adjust the total ratio.

Cartridge Configuration

The following chart shows which gear cartridge configurations are allowable with different motors. Cells shown in GREEN are allowed and cells shown in RED are not allowed.

These ratings are based on the default current limit on SPARK Motor Controllers (or Talon FX). Increasing the current limit increases the maximum torque the motor can produce and may put components of the gearbox outside of their load rating.

Updated charts with 2:1 Cartridge configurations are coming soon!
